Day 4 EPA508 Course Reflection

This course has been great!  The web tools and the links/resourses not to mention the RSS info I am now armed with.  I am more of a tech than an integrator and am armed with a principal’s certificate but after this class I feel I am ready to assemble and lead a team of integrators.  It will have to be informal at first.  I will use my present staff and recruit teachers.  I have plans to get to team meetings and plant seeds and then water and fertilize them during my InfoLit program sessions.  The pace of this course was great because you could go as fast and as far as you wanted with each tool.  They were very customizable and well presented!  Thanks to all in the class and to Alice for sharing so much so well!

Day 3 Reflection -Tools that help…

This class is much more than I expected. All the web tools are wonderful. I don’t get to hung up on the web 2.0, web 2.5, web 1.0 jargon. There are different types of web programming and web apps are the future. I will use these tools to: organize my job; organize teachers; help teachers and administrators organize curriculum; help teams share; promote discussion; problem solve district problems; develop action plans; and communicate with the public. I have reached my objective for this class and more!

Getting to Know Wikkipedia

The wikki seems to me to be where so much of the web will head in the future. The forums of today will become the sites of tomorrow as the technology and the over sight becomes more refined. I will use this article to help educate my teachers throughout the district and help them understand what Wikkipedia is and how they may be able to use it in class. Maybe their class could write or rewrite a section of the site???

The Best Of Flickr

I had written Flickr off as being just the same as Yahoo Pictures. It is much more and this site has great links. I will be exploring here for some time to come. I could use this as a way around the “Google Image” block problem. Also I could have teachers use this to bank and store images -It certainly saves space on our servers. Now to get them to pay enough attention to work within confidentiality and copywrite laws…

Glogal Voices

What a cool site to get a feel for what the rest of the world is thinking. Hopefully people posting do not have a specific slant/spin they are pushing but what great way to get a fresh perspective. It is great to find a place to hear more points of view!  I will share this with the social studies and foreign language folks.  They could use this to open up the world even more for their students.  They will need to review first…

Angus King on the Flat World

Angus King “The World is Flat” Presentation

This is a facinating book report in many ways. The subject matter is eye opening. He helps us realize that gobalization due to the spread of technology is vast. We are the country with the $$Costly$$ imperial trapings of leadership. Schools are tasked with a tough job. Technolgy is the key but we have to be smartest… We are the minority in the world.

Prototype of the $100 Laptop

See the video

This was a very interesting unit. The case design was well done (awful color) and the durabillity must be great. The screen was too small and they really didn’t say anything about file staorage. Using web apps this type of device could work fine!

Reflection -Generation M

This article confirmed my suspicions about kids and media as well as surprised me. Our entertainment industry has been educating our youth for a long many years. This data should make us take a second look at the format of TV and video/computer games. The designs of these are extremely familiar to kids. Where the media has success education should look hard. I was amazed by the statistic showing that the high video gaming student was the high reading student. This is a piece of info maybe we can capitalize on when planning classes!!
